The Little Girl in the Sunflower Dress

The Little Girl in the Sunflower Dress
By: Stephanie Freeman

the little girl in the sunflower dress dances by herself
her dreams fly high and her hopes even higher 'cause no
one's let her down yet

the mountains are her fortress, her comforter, her haven
they keep out the boogie man, the big storms, and the
dangers

the little girl in the sunflower dress still dances by herself
she's an appalachian princess in her prime but doesn't
realize it yet

the mountains are like her pawpaw, old and wise
they hold her desires, her truths, and her lies

the little girl in the sunflower dress isn't dancing by herself
she's in the arms of her first true love but she hasn't realized
it yet

the mountains watch her fall in love slowly through the years
they see her many smiles, laughs, and even all her tears

the little girl in the sunflower dress is no longer so little
she's sweet sixteen and crazy in love with a boy who is a
riddle

the mountains have never let her down nor have they made
her cry
yet, she'll leave them for that boy and she'll love him till she
dies

the little girl in the sunflower dress will realize she was wrong
and she will run back here to this Appalachian haven where
we know she belongs
