Chapters 2 & 3, May 9th-15th

***Read Chapter 4 for the next one***

Chapter two is The Right to Choose a Personally Important Topic. The Right to Go "Off Topic" is the subject of chapter 3.

These are things from the reading that jumped out at me and got me underlining. Pick a few and reflect on them both as a teacher and as a person. Maybe there were other things that took your notice-feel free to reflect on them instead.

From page 17...
"You think about the person you're choosing the gift for, but in the end, you choose something you'd like to receive yourself."

From page 18...
"We get what we think we want, but we also give up the chance for a wonderful surprise from someone who might know us better than we know ourselves."

From page 22...
"Ideas also come from observation. But we must teach ourselves, and our students to sit up and take notice. To be aware of the world around us. To sift through our experience for those ideas that are worth preserving or developing through writing."

Page 31...
"If you were to make a list of the loftier sorts of writing in which a person can engage and the humbler sorts, what might you put on each list?"

From page 37...
"When we shackle writing with rigid prompts, we take over the ownership."
